Paul Wright was a successful squash player and is now a successful squash coach. He began playing at the age of sixteen and showed early promise winning the Essex Men's Open in 1975 and again for the next six years in a row. Graduating to the senior ranks, Paul was consistently amongst the top ten squash players in England. As a professional squash coach in England, Paul coached both junior and senior men's teams achieving success in Finland, Pakistan, Hong Kong and Australia; so much so that he was awarded "UK Coach of the Year" for all sports in 1994. Arriving in New Zealand in 1996 Paul was employed by NZ Squash and made responsible for implementing all programmes from coach education to the preparation of National men's and women's teams for participation in World Championship events. Paul is a member of the New Zealand Coaches' Panel and was responsible for writing the new level 1 syllabus. Coaching at all levels with seniors and juniors, Paul's pupils have included Leilani Joyce and Carol Owens, both British Open champions and, presently, Kashif Shuja, presently ranked number One in the NZ men's rankings.
